WHAT 10-YEAR-OLDS WANT
We want to be happy,
healthy - and
famous
But terrorists, drunks and being fat are worse than
dying
Happiness tops the list of the very best things in the world
for the first time in this year’s annual poll among Britain’s
under ten year olds, who place fame and good health in the second
and third spots. But terrorists, drunks and being fat are
considered worse than dying in the survey among just under 1,800
children. Bullies were fourth.
And, for the first time, the Queen topped the list of the most
famous people in the world, pushing God into the number three
position but only just beating close runner-up Harry Potter.
The nationwide research was carried out via an on-line questionnaire
and through schools by Luton First, sponsors and organisers of
the fourth annual National Kids’ Day. Internet voting took
place during September, October and November at www.loveluton.com
“The idea of the special Kids’ Day is to give pre-teens
a national voice for their opinions in a very simple format,” say
Patricia Murchie of Luton First, a promotional consortium supported
by The University of Bedfordshire, London Luton Airport, Whitbread,
Vauxhall, ‘The Mall’ Arndale Centre, Ballymore Properties
and other organisations, including Luton Borough Council. “This
particular age group has some very clear ideas on how the world
could be changed for the better but are very rarely given the
opportunity to express them.”

Asked what rules they would make if they were king or queen
of the world, the number one response, for the second consecutive
year, was to ban knives and guns. But the second rule would
be more school holidays followed by a ban on bullying. Further
down the list, there would be no cancer and clean hospitals.
Over 80% of the children questioned thought they would probably
marry when they grow up although 16% gave a definite ‘No’. Most
of them want to have children with nearly half opting for two.
Perceptions of wealth vary greatly and, asked how much money
was needed to be rich, the figures ranged from £500 to £1
billion – substantially up on 2006 when true wealth had
a ceiling of £10 million.
Nearly all had a ‘best friend’ who is either funny,
helpful or kind. Some said they were in love.
Saturday remains the best day of the week for most, because
there is no school and they can stay up late to watch TV.
